The midnight sun is shining and the mountains are covered in snow. May is a magical month on Svalbard. Winter is not over and summer is just beginning. This gives us a month filled with contrasts and the opportunity for both summer and winter activities, which is quite unique. Our local travel designers have put together a complete package for you who want to experience everything Svalbard has to offer, from unique dining experiences to unforgettable experiences.

Kingdom of the Midnight Sun
On 19 April, the midnight sun starts to shine in Longyearbyen and on Svalbard. Briefly explained, this means that the traditional night disappears and you can be outside around the clock and explore Svalbard without having to worry about the darkness. At night, the weather actually tends to be better and we often have clear skies and little wind. This is a unique phenomenon that can only be experienced above the Arctic Circle and people travel from far away to experience it.

Experience the wildlife at sea
For those interested in wildlife, a boat trip on Svalbard is a must! That's why we have included two different and unique boat trips in this package. The walrus gathers in colonies on beaches and ice around Svalbard. With the hybrid electric speedboat Kvitbjørn, you get to visit one of the walrus's regular spots in Borebukta. This is a fun and interesting journey.
On the hybrid electric catamaran MS Bard, the journey takes you towards Nordenskhiold Glacier. Ice conditions dictate the route early in the season. Along the way, you'll experience several incredibly beautiful locations, and the landscape is stunning. It's a good idea to bring binoculars on this trip! Wildlife is often observed, and the chance of seeing seals, walruses, and polar bears out on the ice is high in May.

No trip to Svalbard is complete without a visit to the family-run dog yard, Green Dog in Bolterdalen. Dog sledding is a magical experience. The sense of accomplishment, beautiful landscapes, and the interaction between humans and dogs are truly unique. After the trip, waffles and cuddles with the latest puppy litter are always included. A truly fantastic experience!
Wilderness evening
A wilderness evening at Camp Barentz is a truly special experience. The camp is located approximately 15 km outside of Longyearbyen, completely surrounded by wild nature. When you arrive at the cozy cabins, you will be greeted by your host for the evening. You'll be served good drinks and a delicious homemade reindeer bidos, followed by campfire coffee and dessert. Then it's time to learn more about the king of the Arctic – the polar bear. After an interesting lecture, we go out to capture some pictures of the beautiful landscape before returning to the city.
Unique culinary experiences
Perhaps not well-known to many, but Longyearbyen is a hub for food enthusiasts. One might not expect such a diverse selection in a small town near the North Pole, but it's true! At Huset Restaurant, you get more than a meal. With their unique tasting menu, you are taken on a journey through Svalbard. Huset collaborates with a local fisherman and hunters, and on the menu, you'll find local reindeer, ptarmigan, seal, to name a few.
In our own restaurant, Funktionærmessen Restaurant, also voted as Longyearbyen's best, you can enjoy a delicious 3-course king crab dinner. Here, you can savor exquisite food while admiring the view of the city and the iconic Hiorthfjellet mountain.
